A Guide To Growing Peonies In Your Home Garden

Peonies are a classic addition to any garden. They are versatile, as they come in a verity of colors and styles, and are easy to grow. Perhaps one of the best flowers for beginners, and great “filler” flowers for experts, they have many uses among gardeners of all skill levels.

When digging a hole for a peony, make sure that the hole is about’ inches deep, and around the same length in width. Fill the hole appropriately, but also consider mixing in a slow releasing fertilizer. The fertilizer, if formulated correctly for peonies, will allow them to grow to a more fulfilling extent. It also helps otherwise sub-par peonies to grow as normal.

Protecting your peony from harm is a task if you live in a climate that is known to harbor harsh insects. Even arachnids have been known to damage peonies beyond repair. You should be on your best watch to find any damaged leaves, and if found, you should quickly identify the intruder and take steps to counter its attacks. Otherwise your hard work will have been in vain!

It is a poor choice to move flowers around a lot, but this is especially true for peonies. You should plan to keep your peonies in the sam general area for a good period of time, usually for at least a year. It’s also best to not cut blossoms off until you have a considerable amount of progress in the number of your peonies and their blossoms.

Keep a small ring of mulch around the peonies you plant. The mulch will retain water and slowly release it as the air becomes more dry. A fine mulch is the best, while lengthy and oblong wooden mulch is probably best suited for other plants less delicate. When landscaping, a nice deep red color in mulch brings out the color of the peony- but match colors as you see fit.

Once your peony garden begins to thrive, and this process could take several years, you can start shifting your garden around and cutting blossoms. Ideally, peonies are seen as a permanent landscaping addition, so it’s best to have a well-thought out plan before you plant them. Think ahead and try to visualize long term goals for your garden, and then place your peonies accordingly. Drawing the landscape often helps.

In Conclusion

Peony flowers are really a great source of entertainment for any gardener. The end result is beautiful- it’s enough for even non-gardeners to take their chances at growing them. There are more guides and buying options to be found over the Internet if you are interested in growing them.
